Where is the treasure?!!

Grosman’s great novel captures the process of Aryanization in Slovakia, where we see on a small scale how the microcosm of small-town folk began to be dominated by the Hlinka Guard, how fear, hatred, and evil can insidiously infect a person. The sun crawls across the tip of the spire, dogs bark at trains with gleaming weapons that cross the landscape. How far is it from envy to ideology, and what is the value of a human life nearing its end? The novella poses today's reader with an inexorable parallel between the early war years and today’s world.
